At İnönü University Faculty of Medicine’s Turgut Özal Medical Center, deceased-donor liver transplantation began in 2002 and living-donor transplantation in 2005; as of May 2025, the center has performed more than 4,000 liver transplants—approximately 3,500 involving living donors.
The university’s Liver Transplant Institute, founded in 2011, achieved a milestone in 2019 by performing simultaneous liver transplants on five patients, restoring them to health.
In 2022, the institute collaborated with economists from Boston College to develop the Banu Bedestenci Sönmez Liver Paired-Exchange System, through which it completed the world’s first four-way, five-way, six-way, and seven-way paired-exchange liver transplants. By May 2025, 250 liver transplants had been carried out under this program.
Today, the institute has the largest liver-transplant capacity in Europe and the second-largest worldwide.
"Our institute is equipped with the most comprehensive physical infrastructure and equipment. We have a dedicated, capable, and hardworking team that can simultaneously perform liver transplants with up to 6 living donors. When we completed a liver transplant with 5 living donors, it was acknowledged that we were making history here. We continue to make history at İnönü University in Malatya."
