What is the experience of your institute in liver transplantation?

Inonu University Faculty of Medicine Turgut Özal Medical Center started cadaveric liver transplantation in 2002 and living donor liver transplantation in 2005. As of September 1, 2023, a total of 3,550 liver transplants have been performed, including 506 from cadaveric donors and 3,044 from living donors. In 2011, the Liver Transplant Institute was established within Inonu University, and in 2019, simultaneous liver transplants were performed on 5 patients, restoring their health. The institute is also home to Europe's largest and the world's second-largest liver transplant capacity.

What is paired liver exchange?

A donor who is medically incompatible with their own patient can often be compatible with another patient. Similarly, a liver patient who is medically incompatible with their own donor may be compatible with another patient's donor. In such cases, medically compatible donors can be found for these patients if they agree to exchange their donors. The method of obtaining medically compatible transplants for each of two or more patients by exchanging their donors is known as liver paired exchange. It is also possible for a patient who is medically compatible with their own donor to receive a transplant from a more suitable donor through liver paired exchange.

What are the benefits of participating in liver paired exchange?

Through liver paired exchange, patients who are medically incompatible with their own donors can receive a compatible transplant, while patients who are medically compatible with their own donors can receive a transplant from a more suitable donor.

Who can benefit from the paired liver exchange system?

Patients who are medically incompatible with their own donors and patients who, despite being medically compatible with their donors, prefer to receive a transplant from a more suitable donor can benefit from the cross-liver transplantation system.

I have a compatible donor. Can participating in liver paired exchange be beneficial to me?

Yes, it can be. In many cases, although a patient may be medically compatible with their own donor, a more suitable match can be obtained through liver paired exchange, potentially increasing the chances of a successful operation. In our institute, if a patient with a compatible donor can be promptly matched with a more suitable donor for the operation, they can participate in liver paired exchange.
